Presidential Leadership Is Required

Adams stood and interrupted abruptly. “That’s not good enough, sir. Not nearly good enough. You can’t delegate this issue.”

Jefferson was on his feet and fuming. “I agree. That is pure, political palter. America doesn’t need another committee. They need a leader.”

Adams further retorted. “Can you not see the gravity of the issue?”

Jefferson added in anger. “Do you not understand the urgency?”

The last questions hung heavily in the air. All was quiet for a long pause.

Ob was livid, but silent.

Madison responded before Ob said a word. Madison spoke slowly and very calmly. “It was our intention that we would persuade you that immigration was a critical problem, requiring immediate action. It’s an urgent issue that demands personal, Presidential attention. It cannot be delegated.

“The current lack of a comprehensive immigration policy has put the country in danger with uncontrolled border crossings, a hodgepodge of law enforcement that has confused both immigrants and citizens, and a political divisiveness where violence is a real possibility. That threatens our safety. It’s your responsibility to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution and the country.

“The words of Adams and Jefferson may seem harsh but they speak the truth. Any immigration policy will depend on you and your actions.”

Now Ob was considerably flustered. He took his time. He’d been insulted by Adams and Jefferson. Then, very politely, but very directly, he had been challenged by Madison. He was still livid as he considered the proper response. He was not going to be bullied by these antique ghosts.

He needed to regain control, and he certainly wasn’t going to give their arguments any more credence. They accused him of using Hispanics just to gain their votes. He would never resort to such a thing, he told himself. He wanted a way to take care of the Hispanics, to make sure that the Government provided for them. Out loud, he responded, “Yes, Gentlemen. I’ll give the issue the attention it deserves. Please carry on.”

Jefferson was eager to attack again, but he took his cue from Madison, whose eyes clearly communicated a retreat was in order. Madison plainly saw that Ob was tired and stressed. He appeared defensive. Finally Madison used a level voice to speak to the group. “Gentlemen, it’s nearly time for the sun to rise. And it’s definitely time for us to call it a night.”

In just a moment’s time, all the Spirits were gone.
